IN ASSUNIBA NGO

ASSUNIBA is a non-profit international student organization, focuses on four topics: welcoming, accommodation, integration
and outgoing support. The Association is situated at the university of Bari Ateneo and was born by the idea of a small group of
political refugee students who, after enrolling the University could not say goodbye to an experience which indelibly but
positively marked their lives. The association’s mission is to provide assistance and enrich the experience of the students who
chose Bari as the city where to continue or start their studies .

We proudly work with refugees and asylum seekers who have fled their homes due to persecution and intolerance.
The vision is to create a neighbourhood and University campus where all people(students and locals) are valued and included
in the social life. Our mission is to provide leadership, breakthrough knowledge, skills and humanistic attitudes, as well as
innovative resources to advance the development of youth, families, and communities and support the realization of their full
potential in personal and social life.

ASSUNIBA organizes refugee cafes. These provide a safe space for local students and refugees to interact with one another
over cup of coffee and drinks. Students will often donate books to the refugees and the occasional cafe will feature a theme —
a recent one focused on foods of the world in the form of a tasting.

Most importantly, however, the cafes offer people who are new in the campus and neighbourhood a chance to socialize and
meet people who are both from this country or going through a similar experience in trying to navigate it.
ASSUNIBA also offers language classes in which the students teach basic Italian conversation to those who are new to the
country so they might be able to better fit in. As a form of cultural exchange, the tables are turned and the refugees teach the
students a few words in their mother tongues. Students from faculty of Lettere help manage the classes and says they’ve been
enriching for everyone involved.
